Preview: Bristol Revunions and Friends Too

By Steve Wright  Monday Mar 9, 2015

After the success of last year, Bristol University’s sketch troupe Revunions are back with Bristol’s most concentrated week of sketch comedy.

This week the Revunions welcome the brand new duo Sam & Tom (Mon-Tue) followed by the returning Twins (Wed-Thur, pictured). Friday night, meanwhile, features character comedy from Lolly Adefope and circuit comic Mat Ewins.

Here, Revunions’ Will Blok runs us through the programme.

“This week’s programme follows on from a similar show we did last year, with sketch act Twins, character comedian Ellie White (ex-Revunion, now in BBC2’s House of Fools) and stand-up Ollie Jones-Evans. It works quite simply: on each night we and guest acts perform half an hour each – a mix of old and new material. It acts as a nice warm-up in the run up to the Fringe. This year’s lineup has a sketch comedy focus, as we’re the only sketch troupe based in Bristol.

“Monday and Tuesday nights feature Sam & Tom (a.k.a. Sam Nicoresti and Tom Burgess), who are based in Sheffield. They’re a great new double act, made up of the two remaining members of Staple/face, who won the So You Think That’s Funny? new sketch act award in 2013.

“Next up, Twins – Jack Barry and Annie McGrath, former members of Leeds Tealights sketch troupe – are returning for the Wednesday and Thursday nights. Jack and Annie have a really unique, daring comedy style – last year, for example, they performed a sketch entirely in Mandarin.

Ex-Revunion, now established stand-up Mat Ewins joins us on the Friday. We all went and watched him in Edinburgh last summer and were quoting him for the rest of the Fringe. His set was mad and so fast-paced, it’s quite the experience to see him in action.

“On Friday night we also welcome Lolly Adefope, who is predominantly a character comedian. Lolly compered The Underbelly Sketch Off with us, Footlights, Oxford, Leeds and Durham in front of over 200 people, and had them all in stitches. Together she and Mat will make the final night something very special indeed.”
