Review: Dawn French, Bristol Hippodrome
30 million minutes (or 56 years) is the length of time that Dawn French has been on this planet – and also the name of what is surprisingly her first ever solo stand-up tour, which doubles as an autobiographical look back on her life so far.
Two sold-out shows at the Bristol Hippodrome treated the audience to a thought-provoking and engaging evening, with just French, some slides and the occasional music and shouting.
The popular comedian, best known for her partnership with Jennifer Saunders and starring role in The Vicar of Dibley, took us on a journey through her life, coming across as extremely likeable and someone you’d just love as a favourite aunt.

We heard about her own mum, dad, brother, the good and evil grandmas, friends as well as husbands and the apple of her eye – daughter Billie.
But as well as being a rib tickler, this show is also realistic, believable and at times sad.
French talked about sensitive issues such as her desire to have natural children that never manifested, the racist abuse she encountered when married to first husband Lenny Henry and the death of her beloved father who committed suicide.
The audience were clearly touched that she shared all of her ups and downs.
French can certainly be admired for the way she has dealt with and continues to deal with life’s many struggles, and this was an excellent show from an extremely likeable character.
