Review: Jon Richardson, Colston Hall

By Kelly Stooke  Monday Nov 24, 2014

Something strange has happened to Jon Richardson. He’s… happy. By his own admission, Richardson used to be miserable all of the time – but now, he’s only like that for some of the time.

The reason? He’s in love. Yes, he’s met a girl, she’s moved in and he loves her despite her moving his cutlery around and squeezing the toothpaste in the wrong place. It’s meant to be. He doesn’t even mind too much that he doesn’t get single-occupancy rates anymore.

Last time Jon played the Colston Hall, back in December 2012, his gig was cut short when the generator broke and everyone was plunged into darkness and quietness. He soldiered on like a trooper, still performing using a mobile phone to light up his face and shouting to project his voice, and promised to come back and make it up to everyone as soon as he could.

This show was even better than before. We got to hear about Jon’s mate’s stag do, a speedboat incident, his time on the series ‘The Real Man’s Road Trip’, and how he managed to hook his lovely wife-to-be – despite her seeing him at his very worst. Who gets food poisoning from a vegetarian pizza? Jon Richardson, that’s who.

He came on stage with his cowboy hat on, freaked out a little when he thought he saw a bug on stage, and interacted with the audience constantly.

Don’t worry, though, because even a happy, loved-up Richardson still has his obsessive tendencies – and he’s still a moaner. Snooker is his favourite sport “because it’s basically tidying up”, and he still hates most of society.

Jon, don’t leave it so long next time.

Jon Richardson played Colston Hall, Bristol on Friday 21 November.
