Slapstick Festival launches new series of virtual events

By Lowie Trevena  Monday Jul 27, 2020

After successfully launching a series of virtual events, Bristol’s Slapstick Festival continues to lift spirits.

The festival of silent, visual and classic screen comedy will be hosting four events with a star-studded lineup.

Starting on Friday, August 7, long time Slapstick Festival supporter Graeme Garden will discuss his work in radio comedy touching on shows such as I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again and I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue.

Friday, August 14 will see the premiere of a never-before-released film from the festival in 2019, featuring Little and Large. The following week, standup comedian, podcaster and co -presenter of Infinite Monkey Cage Robin Ince will talk to film critic and historian David Robinson.

The last event will be hosted by standup comedian and panel game regular Lucy Porter. A selection of celebrity guests, including Rob Brydon, Pippa Evans and Matt Lucas, will take part in an online film quiz.

All four of the online events will be ticketed and those booking a place will be encouraged to donate to the festival so it can continue to run post-coronavirus.

“These are challenging times for everyone involved with entertaining the public and it is particularly tough on small organisations like Slapstick which rely so heavily on year-round fundraising and ticket sales to keep going,” says festival director Chris Daniels.

“But we’ve been thrilled by the response so far to our online offerings and the upside is that many more people have been able to experience virtual Slapstick than we’d ever be able to accommodate in any local venue.”
