Remembering one of Bristol’s most memorable cultural experiences of recent years

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Sep 2, 2020

Session: The Documentary is a behind the scenes look at one of the most memorable cultural experiences in Bristol in recent years.

Session is a radical reclamation of young Black identity, moving between dance party, afrobeats gig and theatre.

Co-commissioned by Bristol Old Vic Ferment, the collaboration toured the UK for two summers in 2018 and 2019, with the tour produced by Bristol’s own MAYK in association with LIFT.

Led by an extraordinary ensemble of young dancers, Session celebrates belonging, youth and the best of Tottenham in north London.

The documentary, which premieres on YouTube on Friday at 8pm, intersperses backstage footage, interviews with members of the cast and creative team.

Performances in the film were captured at the LIFT 2018 shows at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, with the documentary a testament to the work and impact of this remarkable show which was named by Bristol24/7 as Bristol’s best dance production of 2018.

Session is a work by Still House, Steppaz, Empire Sounds, directed by Dan Canham; with choreography and staging by Odilia Egyiawan, Abena Noel and Dan Canham; and performed by Steppaz Elites and Mini-Elites.
