A helping hand into the film and TV industry

By Temitayo Adebanjo  Thursday Mar 12, 2020

The number of productions being filmed in Bristol is steadily increasing, from BBC projects to independent films. With more productions being made there are more jobs in the film and television industry that need filling.

Fiona Francombe, studio director at The Bottle Yard Studios said: “Film and high end TV production is consistently rising in Bristol. More job opportunities than ever are opening up and we want local people to benefit from them.”

To fill the talent gap, Bristol-based production company Calling the Shots are inviting people from in and around Bristol to The Bottle Yard Studios on March 28 and 29 for workshops and activities in partnership with ScreenSkills.

The weekend, aimed at electricians, office administrators and people working in events or logistics, can take part the free workshops and panel discussions, and use the opportunity to meet employers from the film industry looking for new talent with transferable skills.

“Bristol is a leading light in the screen industry,” says Steve Gear from Calling the Shots. “To keep going from strength to strength we need to bring in more and more skilled people.”

Participants will explore a range of skills, learning the the ins and outs of how production teams are managed in television industries.

The weekend will also include panel discussions with people who have recently entered the  industry, workshops led by experienced film and TV members and a tour of a production set in action. The weekend will be followed on Wednesday, April 8 by an evening of networking with a range of industry practitioners.

Bristol’s film and televison industry is thriving and everyone involved with the creation of the event hopes that it will inform the public to how they might transfer their existing skills into roles into this growing industry.
