An action thriller starring I May Destroy You’s Paapa Essiedu has begun filming in Bristol.

Essiedu played Romeo in the Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory production of Romeo and Juliet in 2015.

The 30-year-old’s standout roles in Black Earth Rising, Kiri and Gangs Of London followed acclaimed performances in Hamlet and King Lear with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

In the Groundhog Day-style Extinction, he plays George, who is recruited into an organisation of people who share his ability and harness it to stop global catastrophes, George instead goes rogue to save the woman he loves. The series also stars Tom Burke, Anjli Mohindra, Caroline Quentin, Rudi Dharmalingam and Charly Clive.

“It’s great to welcome Urban Myth Productions back to Bristol for this shoot,” says Laura Aviles, senior film manager at Bristol City Council.

“With the worldwide appetite for screen content stronger than ever, this fast-growing sector is going to be a crucial part of national and regional economic recovery and as a location, Bristol’s film friendly infrastructure is well placed to cater for that demand.”

Extinction is directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner, director of Amazon Prime’s Beat, who also serves as executive producer.  It is written by Joe Barton, who is also executive producer for the series, alongside Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy. It will be produced by Adam Knopf.
