“I am going upstairs to take orf my hat.” Er, sorry. Just reliving one of the highlights of TV’s most boring costume drama series. The big-screen Downton Abbey sequel, A New Era, was the only major new release at the weekend and was propelled to the top of the chart on a tidal wave of forelock-tugging hype. But despite showing in virtually every cinema in the country (it had the second-widest release of all time), the film’s opening haul was 40% lower than that of its predecessor. By contrast, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was bounced into second place, is now £2.5m up on the total take of the first Sonic film. Further down the chart, the highest-grossing release in the top ten, The Batman, finally crawled over the £40m mark after nine weeks on release.
