In what may come as something of a surprise to those of us who thought Super Mario Bros was a naff 1980s video game whose enthusiasts had moved on to flashier things, and are still getting over the feeble 1993 Bob Hoskins live-action adaptation, the new animated feature shattered global box office records at the weekend, deposing Frozen 2 to enjoy the biggest ever opening for an animation (as well as the biggest opening for a game adaptation). Unsurprisingly, polling has revealed that its audience is overwhelmingly male and aged 18-34. Two other new releases made the top five. Ben Affleck’s Air, a drama about trainers which it’s reasonably safe to assume appeals to the same audience, scraped into fourth place, followed by the latest entry in the seemingly endless cycle of exorcism horrors, The Pope’s Exorcist.
