Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk contines to reign supreme, becoming the first release of 2017 to hold top place in the chart for four straight weeks. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was the last film to achieve this feat. Of the new releases, the well-received Annabelle: Creation, beat Charlize Theron vehicle Atomic Blonde into third place, underlining once again that quality genre horror can often trump star power at the box office. At the foot of the chart, The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature became the latest kiddie animation to under-perform this summer (joining Cars 3, Captain Underpants, etc) as nippers continue to flock to Despicable Me 3. The Gru’n’minions threequel joined Dunkirk in powering through the £40m barrier this week and has just overtaken Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 to become the third-biggest hit of 2017. Don’t forget you can meet the film’s co-director, Pierre Coffin, when he comes to Bristol for the Encounters festival next month.
