That’s a career-best opening for Quentin Tarantino – and indeed for Brad Pitt – as Once upon a Time in Hollywood blasts away all those summer kidflicks and rockets to the top of the chart. This is a hugely impressive result for a number of reasons. The film’s 161 minute length means cinemas are limited in the number of screenings they can cram into a single day. And the 18 certificate excludes unfortunate members of the spotty adolescent community who are unable to pass themselves off as adults. The Lion King is still doing a roaring trade (sorry), as is Toy Story 4. Both films sailed past the £60m mark at the weekend, with the former overtaking Mama Mia! Here We Go Again to grab 14th place in the UK all-time top 20. Dora and the Lost City of Gold was second-highest charting new release, proving a rare exception to those rival family films that have been stiffing at the box office all summer – Uglydolls being the latest example. This one opened on even less than last week’s Playmobil and failed to chart.
