Buddy action-comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard has finally taken out Dunkirk after four weeks at the top. But closer inspection of the figures reveals that only a familiar fiddle prevented Christopher Nolan’s WWII flick becoming the first film since Avatar to achieve the feat of five straight weeks of chart domination. If The Hitman’s Bodyguard‘s earnings from its Thursday preview hadn’t been amalgamated into the ‘weekend’ total, it would have had to settle for second place. Still, Nolan and his distributor shouldn’t be too perturbed, as Dunkirk is closing on £50m – becoming only the second release this year to do so – and will shortly claim a place in the UK all-time top 20. Elsewhere, audiences stayed away in droves from Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower, which arrived on a tidal wave of negative reviews. Outside the top ten, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power bagged £210,000 – significantly up on the first film, though the second Gorefest opened in a considerably larger number of cinemas.
