The record-breaking heat of the Bank Holiday weekend meant that cinema audiences melted away. Angel Has Fallen topped the chart by a whisker, but only because two days of previews were rolled up into that ‘weekend’ figure, in accordance with peculiar cinema industry accounting tradition. It’s still way behind the first two films in the unlovely Gerard Butler action franchise, but could yet make up lost ground if the weather turns shitty again. In the battle of the horror flicks, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was the comfortable winner, leaving Crawl to snap at its ankles. Unsurprisingly, the big arthouse hit of the moment is Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory, which became the Spanish director’s second-biggest UK box office opener behind 2006’s Oscar nominated Volver.
