As Britain sweltered in the hottest late August Bank Holiday on record, nobody (estimate) went to the pictures. So while all the new releases under-performed, we shouldn’t read too much into this. Tom Cruise vehicle American Made was the only film to take more than £1m over the weekend, but it’s perhaps worth noting how close Dunkirk came to reclaiming the top spot as The Hitman’s Bodyguard tumbled to third place. Despite the heat, Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit performed strongly on a limited number of screens, becoming her third biggest UK opener after Point Break and Zero Dark Thirty. In the loser department, even the star power of Scarlett Johansson couldn’t save raunchy comedy Rough Night, which failed to chart. Rival chick flick Girls Trip, meanwhile, continues to do well and is heading towards £8m. At the foot of the chart, everyone continued to stay away from Stephen King stinker The Dark Tower, which will disappear altogether next week.
