Shitty weekend weather meant that everyone fled into the comforting warmth of the nation’s cinemas – except, apparently, petrolheads. The earnings of Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw tumbled a whopping 54%, falling to second place (though it should be remembered that the film’s opening ‘weekend’ included two days of previews), which is fairly consistent with the general pattern of fans of such blockbusters, er, racing to see them during their opening weekend. Disney’s The Lion King, meanwhile, continues to take around £10m a week and now ranks as the second-highest grossing film of 2019. Although its cumulative takings roared past those of fellow Disney release Toy Story 4 this week, Woody, Buzz and Forky actually increased their earnings by 16% during their eighth week on release. Normally, one might expect other school holiday kidflicks to prosper, scooping up the pocket money pounds of nippers who’ve already seen the top two releases. But that doesn’t seem to be happening, as The Angry Birds Movie 2 and Playmobil: The Movie are both languishing at the foot of the chart. It’s not exactly great news for Gurinder Chadha, either. Although Blinded by the Light isn’t doing badly, despite decidedly mixed reviews, its opening is on a par with lesser entries in the Chadha oeuvre, such as 2008’s Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging.
