James Cameron’s sequel Avatar: The Way of Water has powered past the $1 billion mark at the global box office, taking more than £25m in the UK and Ireland in just two weeks to become the uncontested Christmas champ. That said, according to some analysts, the watery epic will need to reach $2 billion just to break even. Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical holds firm in second place and will be joined by a singalong version on January 1. Elsewhere, the festive reissue business did a roaring trade with old favourites dominating the top ten. These lined up pretty much in reverse order of quality, with the godawful, mysteriously popular Love Actually in fourth place and the peerless The Muppet Christmas Carol at the foot of the chart. All of these films will be gone by next week.
