Michael Mann’s Ferrari was the highest charting new release over the last weekend of 2023. But it still fell rather short of Wonka, which recorded a post-Christmas boost in takings to reach an impressive £43.8m, becoming the fourth biggest hit of the year behind Barbie, Oppenheimer and The Super Mario Bros Movie. Warner’ Christmas gift to comicbook nerds, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – the final film in the DC Extended Universe – took third place. But in keeping with superhero movie trends, it’s likely to wind up with rather less in the kitty than the first Aquaman flick. Great Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron is not only the arthouse hit of the moment but has also already surpassed the takings of Spirited Away to become the director’s biggest ever success at the UK box office.
