Cinema takings were up across the board over the New Year weekend, with many films recording increases above 50%. Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to lead the pack, adding another £18m to its tally. The Spidey flick is also doing great business globally and has now even overtaken the pre-pandemic Black Panther. Matthew Vaughn’s third Kingsman flick, the prequel The King’s Man, had to settle for second place, its £3.5m earnings being rather less than half that of its predecessor Kingsman: The Golden Circle‘s opening weekend back in 2017. Indeed, the film has underperformed globally even with suitably adjusted Covid-era expectations, so this may be the last we’ll see of the Kingsmen. Further down the chart, Spielberg’s West Side Story continues to suffer the indignity of being out-performed by Clifford the Big Red Dog. The primary-coloured hound has now taken nearly £1m more than the lavish musical during the same period on release.
