Marvel’s Black Panther scored the biggest opening day of 2018 at the UK box office, with a haul of £2.67m. That’s not bad going for a Tuesday. The film’s six-day opening ‘weekend’ of £17.7m puts it just behind Marvel record holder Avengers: Age of Ultron. Screen International’s number crunchers report that this means the first major black superhero movie has taken more loot in its first six days than Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man, and Justice League managed during their entire runs. Guillermo del Toro’s splendid The Shape of Water was the second-biggest opener, while the loser of the week was mediocre comedy Father Figures, which failed to chart.
As anticipated, Fifty Shades Freed has started to detumesce rather rapidly, but the critic-proof The Greatest Showman continues its seemingly unstoppable run, topping £30m after eight seeks on release. The release of a singalong version this Friday will no doubt boost its coffers still further. Also still going strong is Aardman’s Early Man, whose takings actually increased by 2% during half-term.
