Any doubts about the critic-proof Fifty Shades franchise’s ability to keep it up for a third steamy session were dispelled at the weekend when threequel Fifty Shades Freed comfortably topped the chart. There is, however, evidence that enthusiasts came early. Some 55% of all cinema tickets sold on Friday were for this one, making it the biggest opening day for any film this year. But the weekend total of £6.1m was behind those of the previous two instalments. There was comparatively little interest in any of the other new releases, all of which failed to chart. The Mercy with Colin Firth took just £300,000, while Clint Eastwood’s The 15:17 to Paris did marginally worse, underlining our national lack of interest in flag-salutin’ true tales of US heroism. Elsewhere, The Greatest Showman‘s remarkable box office run continued and two big awards contenders sailed past a couple of barriers, with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri now amassing more than £10m and The Darkest Hour topping £20m.
