All that awards season hype has sent punters scurrying to cinemas to watch the main contenders. Now an Oscar frontrunner, Sam Mendes’s 1917 was the clear victor, its £7.4m haul falling a little shy of the £10m opening of Christopher Nolan’s broadly comparable Dunkirk. Little Women actually climbed two places to number two, though that was primarily due to its takings declining rather more slowly than those of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Jumanji: The Next Level (which has just reached £30m). A cynic (guilty!) might even observe that the controversy over Greta Gerwig’s failure to be nominated at both the BAFTAs and Oscars could well work in the film’s commercial favour. Further down the chart, Jojo Rabbit (nominated for six Oscars) added another £1m to its tally over the weekend. The loser? That’ll be the Seberg biopic with Kristen Stewart, which took a miserable £37,000 nationwide.
