M. Night Shyamalan’s not-especially-cunning plan seems to have worked. By bringing together characters from two of his bigger hits – Unbreakable and Split – he hoped to enjoy an even bigger success with Glass. And sure enough, it easily topped the UK box office chart, opening 34% ahead of Split. Glass was probably helped by offering blessed popcorn blockbuster relief from all those worthy awards season flicks, as well as the fact that second-placed Mary Queen of Scots doesn’t seem to be doing quite as well as its gong-craving rivals Stan & Ollie and The Favourite. Other contenders are enjoying mixed fortunes too. A sharp drop in takings caused Colette to tumble out of the top ten, while Beautiful Boy failed to chart – despite doing okay-ish business. At the other end of the popularity scale, a couple of enduring crowd-pleasers reached big milestones this week, with Mary Poppins topping £40m and Bohemian Rhapsody powering through the £50m barrier.
