The really striking thing about this week’s chart is that rather than a handful of films accounting for most of the UK box office revenue, it’s pretty evenly spread. Each of the top nine films took more than £1m over the weekend, which is a very rare occurrence. This perhaps reflects the fact that, just for once, cinemas are catering to multiple audiences. Nerds continue to flock to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which has now topped £50m. Nippers remain entertained by Frozen II, which also reached £50m, and Jumanji: The Next Level. Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen caters to the swearing and shooting needs of the sizeable geezer contingent, while early awards season contenders Little Women and Jojo Rabbit slug it out for supremacy among the chattering classes before the arrival of 1917 on Friday. Those oft-neglected mature audiences, meanwhile, shuffled out in force for ‘king of the waltz’ Andre Rieu’s latest release, 70 Years Young, whose £1.7m haul once again puts rival concert films by boy bands firmly in the shade.
