Yay! Finally some good news for the cinema industry. With the nation’s sportingpersons reverting to their usual standard, mercifully sparing us grotesque displays of misplaced pre-Brexit nationalist triumphalism, the hordes flocked to see Pixar’s Incredibles 2. Brad Bird’s sequel not only dragged the UK box office out of the doldrums but also proved a massive success for Pixar, its £9.6m opening weekend being second only to Toy Story 3‘s £11.5m three-day opening and way ahead of the first Incredibles‘ £6.3m. But that’s about it for good news, because everything else continues to do pretty badly. Sure, Dwayne Johnson vehicle Skyscraper is performing okay-ish, but is hardly the hit that Universal must have hoped for, while the other new entry, The Secret of Marrowbone, probably wouldn’t have charted in any normal week with its mediocre £171,161 haul.
