Hot and sunny weather is generally bad news for cinemas, as punters prefer to bask outdoors. But during a sweltering heatwave, those lovely air-conditioned auditoria suddenly seem a lot more attractive. So while overall box office takings were down slightly at the weekend the big hitters held up well, with little change in the chart and each of the top three taking more than £1m. Thor: Love and Thunder is now up to £20m after just two weeks, overtaking Thor: The Dark World. Minions: The Rise of Gru continues to delight nippers and juvenile delinquents alike. But Top Gun: Maverick is the film that continues to hold up most strongly, recording a mere 20% drop in takings. It currently sits in 14th place in the all-time UK box office chart and should be breathing down the neck of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part Two by next week. Despite warm reviews, The Railway Children Return failed to grab a place in the top five, but should be with us for most of the summer as middle class parents drag their offspring kicking and screaming to endure its gentle, old-school charms.
