The hottest, sunniest weekend of the year depressed admissions further over the last days of covid restrictions, with overall takings down by around 25%. But that didn’t stop Black Widow grabbing nearly another £2m. There was also a bumper crop of five new entries, three of which bumped Fast & Furious 9 from second to fifth place in its fourth week on release. Space Jam: A New Legacy was the comfortable winner of the battle of the animated family flick sequels, leaving The Croods 2: A New Age to languish in fifth place behind horror sequel The Forever Purge. At the foot of the chart, well-received music documentary Summer of Soul has proven a modest crossover success, straddling the arthouse and multiplex circuits.
