Nobody’s going to the cinema. Oh, OK, people are starting to trickle back but not in any significant numbers. Around 30 more cinemas opened at the weekend. But takings were up just 1.81% and remain 98.1% down on the equivalent period last year, according to the number crunchers at trade mag Screen International. Exhibitors had pinned their hopes on a slate of summer blockbusters to tempt back socially distanced punters, but distributors appear to be taking fright. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was due out on August 12 but Warners have now pulled it yet again. That leaves the cinemas to rely on catalogue titles for revenue, which is great news for anyone who wants to see classics on the big screen. The only post-lockdown releases to chart are Trolls World Tour, Black Water: Abyss and kiddie animation Dreambuilders (which isn’t showing in Bristol).
