It’s official: Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk is that greatest of rarities – a summer blockbuster that’s as big a hit with critics as it is with popcorn munchers. Currently scoring 94/100 on review aggregator website Metacritic, it enjoyed the fourth biggest three-day opening of the year, behind Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Despicable Me 3. That Despicable threequel, meanwhile, cemented its position as the summer kiddie animation of choice by holding on to second place as it charged through the £30m barrier after just four weeks on release, leaving rival Cars 3 for dust. Bouffant-haired Andre Rieu’s popularity among the mature waltzing audience continues to grow, as the broadcast of his 2017 Maastricht Concert relieved them of even more pension money than last year’s record-breaking show. Just behind Andre, Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver continues to hold up well. With more than £10m in the kitty, his jukebox thriller has comfortable out-performed the putative blockbusting likes of The Mummy and Transformers: The Last Knight.
