Ker-chinng! That’s another £10m in the, ahem, kitty for The Lion King, which has overtaken its Disney live action predecessor, Aladdin (currently hovering at the foot of the chart after 10 weeks on release), in just 14 days. Disney also retains second place with Toy Story 4, which has broken through the £50m barrier to become the second-biggest film of the year behind Avengers: Endgame. It doesn’t have far to go to overtake The Incredibles 2 to rank as the second-biggest animation of all time at the UK box office. The number one? That’ll be Toy Story 3 on £74m. The biggest new release was the event cinema screening of André Rieu’s 2019 Maastricht Concert. Its £1.5m total was a little shy of the record-breaking £1.75m haul of his New Year show. But it’s worth remembering that the bouffant-haired ‘king of the waltz’ is considerably more successful in cinemas than all those big-name rock acts and boy bands. More punters flocked to this sole broadcast (plus a few mop-up encores) than went to an entire week of screenings of Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans and The Current War. Flop of the week, meanwhile, was The Intruder, which took a paltry £51,000 nationwide.
