Yes, it’s the first box office chart since the weekend of March 13-15. It’s also the weirdest one ever, since only a handful of cinemas were open to socially distanced punters. Pixar’s Onward remained at the top, albeit with a dramatic drop in revenue. This held off fellow family animation Trolls World Tour, which made history by becoming the first major film release to be streamed during the lockdown. With no new releases on offer, cinemas had to fall back on classics to entice punters back, which explains why all those anniversary reissues popped up again. Overall takings were around 99% down on what you might expect at this time of year, but things should perk up just a little bit next week after more cinemas reopen on Friday. Locally, the Orpheus and Showcase cinemas are expected to be welcoming punters back. The Odeon reopens on July 16, the Vue and Cineworld chains remain shut until July 31, and most of the indies are keeping their powder dry for the time being. (Note that all these dates are subject to change.) Check our comprehensive if somewhat depleted film listings for details.
