The misery continued for the film exhibition industry as the sunshine and Hingerland World Cup match combined to produce the lowest-grossing top ten of the year. It was a tad worse than the weekend of April 20, during which the only major new release was The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. That said, chart-topper The First Purge actually did rather well by its own franchise standards, its £1.8 million opening weekend (including previews) being the highest of the series so far. But the other new releases did even worse than last week’s batch. None of them charted and all were beaten by the one-day-only 50th anniversary reissue of Beatles animation Yellow Submarine. These losers included US sports comedy Uncle Drew; music doc Whitney, which is struggling despite following the same formula as the hit Amy; and, worst of all, Britcom Swimming with Men, which took a pitiful £59,000. With an end to the football finally in sight, the industry is now pinning its hopes on the double-whammy of Incredibles 2 and Skyscraper, both of which open this week.
