Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom regained the top spot from the gender-flipped Ocean’s 8, but the real story is how empty the nation’s cinemas were as audiences opted, once again, for sunshine and football. With total takings of less than £7m nationwide, it ranked as the second-worst weekend of the year. This meant that even the highest-charting new release, Sicario 2: Soldado, struggled, opening with less than half as much loot as its predecessor. Despite strong reviews, survival flick Adrift could only make seventh place with just £400,000. But at least it did better than Disney doggy romcom Patrick, which managed a feeble £575 per screen. Even the mature audience stayed at home, with The Bookshop taking just £44,000 nationwide. There’s no sign of an upturn this weekend either. The B24/7 film dept’s football enthusiast chums tell us that Hingerland are playing again on Saturday, the weather forecast suggests no break in the warm and dry weather, and the biggest new release is niche horror The First Purge.
