Just one week at the top for Logan before it was crushed by Kong: Skull Island. This, in turn, is likely to be seen off by Beauty and the Beast next week. Those blockbusters sure are coming thick and fast now that awards season is over. Kong‘s performance matched that of the first, ahem, MonsterVerse film Godzilla, which means there’ll be no let-up in the roaring and stomping over the next few years. Counter-programming means there’s plenty for blockbuster nay-sayers too. Viceroy’s House and Hidden Figures are both doing well among what might be characterised/stereotyped as older, female-skewed audiences. Outside the top ten, Paul Verhoeven’s controversial Elle is packing ’em in at arthouses. And it’s perhaps worth noting that if NT Live’s broadcast of Hedda Gabler had taken place at the weekend, its £645,000 take would have seen it claim fourth position in the chart. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the big loser was light comedy Collinsfest The Time of Their Lives, which hauled in just £100,000.
