On the face of it, Captain Marvel‘s whopping 48% drop in earnings during its second weekend on release would appear to be catastrophic. But this is the world of superhero flicks, which plays by its own rules. Excitable members of the nerd community always stampede en masse to the openings of these films. And by superhero movie standards, Ms. Marvel is holding up very well indeed. Even the biggest hits, such as the Avengers films, tend to fall by at least 60% over their second weekends. Despite iffy reviews, plucky formulaic feelgood Britflick Fisherman’s Friends is doing very well in second place, comfortably holding off the challenge from US gender-flip remake What Men Want.
The big loser was the latest angsty parent/junkie child drama, Ben is Back. Not even the star power of Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges could drum up much interest in this one, which took a miserable £718 per screen for a feeble £82,000 total. Misz Masz Czyli Kogel Mogel 3? That’s a Polish romcom threequel, obviously.
