Old big-ears flew to the top of the UK box office with ease, but Tim Burton’s film is being painted as something of a flop by Disney live-action makeover standards. Dumbo is doing better in the UK than in the US, but that £6m opening puts it well behind Beauty and the Beast (£19.7m) and The Jungle Book (£9.9m). Still, with a half-term wind in its, erm, ears, the film should hold steady next week despite multiple animated challenges. Dumbo will have to hurry up to haul in his loot, however, as the Disney live-actionification production line delivers Aladdin next month. The second biggest new release was the Met Opera’s live broadcast of Die Walkure, underlining the continuing appeal of event cinema in general and un-woke Mr. Wagner in particular. Outside the top ten, Carol Morley’s Out of Blue is struggling a little on £40,000 and stands no chance of reaching her personal best of £400,000+ with The Falling four years ago.
