It’s easy (very easy, in fact . . .) to be cynical about yet another big-screen Batman iteration. But despite mixed reviews, Robert Pattinson’s downbeat take on the rubber-clad superhero proved a huge hit at the global box office, accounting for more than 75% of all cinema tickets sold over the weekend. Brandishing its distinguishing definite article, The Batman also became the third-biggest opener since the pandemic began. The two films ahead of it, No Time To Die and Spider-Man: No Way Home, are currently locked in a battle for fourth place in the all-time top ten, with Spidey slowly creeping up on Bond. Virtually everything else just shuffled down a place, with Uncharted breaching the £20m barrier and Sing 2 eclipsing Sing as it sang and danced its way over £30m. Ken Branagh’s Belfast remains the only awards season contender on general release to drum up any interest among the paying public, after Cyrano fell out of the chart after just one week with a whopping 85% drop in takings.
