As so often happens with superhero flicks, it seems as though those who wanted to see Avengers: Endgame all stampeded to the box office in the first couple of weeks. A whopping 69% drop over the Marvel film’s third weekend has now torpedoed early talk of it becoming the high grossing film in UK history. However, that £80m haul isn’t too shabby and it has now overtaken Titanic to bag sixth place in the UK all-time top ten. Detective Pikachu did much better than anyone expected to take top place, so there’s clearly still plenty of love for Pokemon. Movies for grown-ups are proving more selective in their appeal, although some smaller scale arthouse releases are doing very well for themselves outside the top ten. So although Tolkien may be struggling to find an audience in the multiplexes, Claire Denis’s High Life is performing strongly in a limited number of cinemas, while quirky Icelandic eco warrior drama Woman At War recorded the lowest drop in earnings of any film on release. Underlining the ongoing popularity of event cinema, the Met Opera’s live broadcast of Dialogues Des Carmélites was the fifth most popular screening nationwide on Saturday.
