Nasty aliens scared off wacky aliens in the battle of the xenomorphs as Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant deposed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 from the top of the chart. The former actually fell short of the opening £6.24m haul of its predecessor, Prometheus (remarkably Scott’s biggest-ever UK hit, despite those stinky reviews), while the latter has now become the third film of 2017 to take more than £30m. If you ever needed evidence of the increasing popularity of event cinema, look no further than the Met Opera’s live broadcast of Der Rosenkavalier. This one nationwide screening took more than Miss Sloane managed all weekend, the Jessica Chastain political thriller having enjoyed what the industry describes as a ‘soft opening’. Next week we’ll find out whether Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword has become as big a flop here as it’s been in the US. Over there, it landed in third place behind the Goldie Hawn/Amy Schumer comedy Snatched, which also opens in the UK on Friday.
