Let’s hear it for the frantic rabbit! Exhibitors but on a brave face in the run-up to the grand reopening on May 17. But would anybody turn up? Well, yes, they did – in droves. But this was mainly for one film: Peter Rabbit 2, which achieved an impressive, almost pre-pandemic haul of £4.6m, despite all the social distancing measures in place. This rather suggests that family films will drive the return to cinemas, boding well for Disney’s Cruella next week. Nomadland grabbed second place with nearly £1m, which is also pretty impressive given that the big Oscar winner, along with many of the other ‘new’ releases, is already available from video on demand services. Once again, those prophecies about the Death of Cinema, which reached fever pitch during lockdown, seem to be wide of the mark.
