It’s all change at the top, with a trio of new releases hogging the top three places. Disney’s total domination of the UK box office (they own Marvel, remember) continues as the Mouse House’s live action version of its Aladdin triumphed over decidedly mixed reviews to emerge as the clear winner. Reg Dwight had to settle for second place, but Rocketman still opened well ahead of both A Star is Born and The Greatest Showman. It doesn’t stand much chance of reaching Bohemian Rhapsody, but that’s due in part to having a 15 certificate. The Secret Life of Pets 2 had to settle for third place, not least because it didn’t enjoy the two days of previews that boosted the top two films. The animated pet sequel is still lagging behind its predecessor, but should pick up over the half term holiday. Avengers: Endgame continues to tumble, taking less than £1m over the weekend for the first time in five weeks. It now seems highly unlikely to overtake Avatar in the all-time UK box office chart, in which it currently occupies fifth place. Further down the chart, Aretha Franklin concert film Amazing Grace continues to beat all current arthouse releases and has now taken more than half-a-million quid. Locally, the Watershed is holding this one over for another week.
