No surprises as this week’s blockbuster tops the chart. Mind you, Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazer’s Revenge‘s £5.2m opening weekend was less than half the £11.6m booty of its immediate predecessor On Stranger Tides. While Disney might be minded to quibble about Mr. Depp’s fee for the inevitable next one, they won’t be too disappointed as the film’s strong US performance – along with that of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – has helped the House of Mouse to become the first studio this year to gross more than $1 billion at the North American box office. Sandwiched between the two Disney behemoths is the Diary of a Wimpy Kid ‘reboot’, The Long Haul, which took a little less than its predecessor, Dog Days, though its ‘opening weekend’ was boosted by a whole additional weekend of previews. Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, meanwhile, tumbled all the way to fifth place. But at least his Arthurian romp isn’t doing as badly here as it is in the US, where it remains behind the Amy Schumer comedy, Snatched.
