Even the combined might of Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, Uncle Tom Cobley and all couldn’t dislodge Disney’s live-action Aladdin from the top of chart over the half term weekend. In fact, without those two days of previews, Godzilla: King of the Monsters would have opened in fourth place behind The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Rocketman. The monster sequel is also lagging well behind Gareth Edwards’ 2014 franchise reboot, which opened on £6.4m. Elsewhere, Booksmart is looking like a smart piece of counter-programming. Naturally, one hesitates to stereotype anyone in the current offence-taking climate, but if the film’s distributor calculated that there are an awful lot of women out there eager to see something clever and funny that isn’t aimed at children or full of explosions, monsters and/or superheroes, this has certainly paid off.
