The Super Mario Bros. Movie was finally knocked off the top of the chart after four consecutive weeks. The victor was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, whose £12.1m haul ranks as a franchise-best result when previews are also taken into account. James Gunn’s threequel has also been named ‘Best Animal Rights Movie of the Year’ by PETA for spotlighting the cruelty of animal experimentation. Those Super Mario Bros, meanwhile, are on the verge of reaching £50m, which will earn them a place in the UK all-time top 50. Further down the chart, Harold Fry continues to soak up the more mature pounds, while Return to Seoul is the arthouse hit of the moment, vindicating streamer MUBI’s decision to give it a cinema release.
