Break out the marmalade sandwiches! Buoyed by warm reviews, Paddington 2 scored the biggest opening weekend ever recorded by its distributor Studiocanal. The sequel’s £8.2m haul was well up on the first Paddington‘s £5.1m, and the film is confidently predicted to end its run with more than £40m in the polite Peruvian bear’s piggy bank. This ursine chartbuster has also thrown a jammy gauntlet in Aardman’s direction, as Nick Park’s Early Man is released by the same distributor at the end of January. As expected, although Murder on the Orient Express was dislodged from the top spot, it recorded only a tiny decline on its first week, suggesting this one’s in for a long haul and is unlikely to hit the buffers any time soon. The Florida Project enjoyed a very strong opening, just behind US flag-saluter Only the Brave, which is showing in far more cinemas. Perhaps surprisingly, the big flop of the weekend was Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, which took a piddling £9,000 nationwide.
