It’s been judged something of a mega-flop, but that didn’t stop Marvel’s barrel-scraping The Marvels topping the UK box office chart after uncritical nerds flocked to the nation’s multiplexes. That’s still something of a pyrrhic victory, mind, as The Marvels notched up the lowest opening weekend of  any Marvel film in 12 years. Fortunately, there were plenty of offerings to lure grown-ups and provide hope for civilisation too. Palme d’Or winning French courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall was the big hit on the arthouse circuit, recording an impressive screen average from just 160 cinemas to bag fifth place in the chart, just ahead of the well-received Nicolas Cage black comic fantasy Dream Scenario. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, meanwhile, is proving to be one of his biggest box office hits, holding steady at number three.
