The motley collection of remakes, reboots and sequels that comprised this week’s major new releases failed to excite much enthusiasm in punterland. Robin Hood fared best in fourth place, but even this couldn’t dislodge Bohemian Rhapsody in its fifth week on release. So Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald enjoyed a second week at the top. But with a whopping 54% drop in takings, the Potter prequel sequel is lagging behind the first film at an ever-increasing rate. Outside the top ten, ultra-now teensploitation flick Assassination Nation could only manage a feeble £35,000. In stark contrast to this one’s self-conscious hyperactivity, the gentle Shoplifters has proven a huge arthouse hit, enjoying the fourth-highest screen average of the weekend. If you haven’t seen this one yet, you may like to know that the Watershed has just retained it for another week, with three screenings a day. See our comprehensive film listings for details.
