In what’s been a pretty shitty week for cinema, takings for the top five films rose by more than 11% over the rainy weekend. Now admittedly that’s from a pretty low base, but Christopher Nolan’s Tenet continues to do well in its sixth week at the top. It’s also now taken more than $300m globally. Trouble is, distributors are running scared, pulling all their other ‘tentpole’ releases and leaving a void that could make the over-hyped ‘death of cinema’ a self-fulfilling prophecy. Locally, this week’s industry announcements will have zero impact as neither the Broadmead Odeon nor the Cineworld in Hengrove Park reopened after lockdown. Cats & Dogs 3: Paws Unite! was the highest new entry, while Sofia Coppola’s streaming-bound On the Rocks became the clear winner among cinemagoing grown-ups who’ve already seen Tenet. Meanwhile, Covid-19 couldn’t defeat the UK’s oldest box office draw. The event cinema outing of Sir David Attenborough’s A Life on Our Planet is closing on half-a-million quid, with further encore screenings booked for this week.
