Surprise! All that ‘bad’ publicity (y’know – violence, Gary Glitter, etc) helped Joker exceed the most optimistic industry projections to bag a whopping £12.5m at the weekend. That should cheer up Mr. Warner and his brothers after The Goldfinch proved to be such an unmitigated box office disaster. Judy had to settle for second place, but still did pretty well to score £2m. Along with Hustlers and Downton Abbey, which continue to hold up strongly, it’s a shrewd counter-programming release offering ‘something for the ladies’, as we might have termed it in less woke times. Mr. Fellowes’ toffs have also now barged their way into the 2019 top ten, just behind Rocketman. Meanwhile, those seemingly endless repeat event cinema screenings of Fleabag continue to do extraordinary business. The National Theatre’s broadcast is now up to a total of £3.5m
