Three major new releases vied for the top spot and wound up in reverse order of critical approval. Top of the chart was this week’s Marvel flick, Venom (Rotten Tomatoes score: 30%), followed by Johnny English Strikes Again (37%) and A Star is Born (91%). However, the wise money would be on A Star is Born sticking around for quite a while as Venom takes a swift tumble, having sated the finite numbers of over-excited, uncritical nerds. As expected, last week’s chart topper, Night School, took a dive from first to fifth place. At the foot of the chart, The Nun now ranks as the highest-grossing film in the Conjuring franchise, which suggests there’s considerable more spookiness to come before this one runs its course. Meanwhile, The Wife remains the clear arthouse winner of the moment, baosting the tiniest drop in admissions of any film in the top ten.
