Another week, another horror movie. Joining Saw X and The Nun 2 in the chart as Halloween approaches, The Exorcist: Believer hit the top spot at the weekend, scoring a franchise-best opening. Positioned as a direct sequel to the 1973 original film, Believer is directed by David Gordon Green, who made his name in the indie sector with George Washington before becoming the go-to guy for the latest instalments in big horror franchises (notably the recent Halloween trilogy). The much-hyped The Great Escaper, featuring Glenda Jackson’s final performance, had a comparatively soft opening at number four. Mobile phone drama Blackberry was the only other new entry in the top ten. Failing to make the chart was Golda, with Helen Mirren labouring beneath a layer of ‘Jewface’ prosthetics as Israel’s fourth prime minister, Golda Meir. The timing of this one’s release could not have been worse given recent events.
